Urumea, Sagardoaren Ibaia

History and cider join hands on this journey on the waters of the Urumea river

The Urumea, Sagardoaren Ibaia initiative was created by the Lizeaga and Petritegi cider houses in Astigarraga. For centuries the River Urumea has been the main link between Astigarraga and San Sebastian. Making good use of the tides and currents, our forebears transported goods between these towns on barges and flatboats, wooden river vessels. Among these goods was cider, made by the farmhouse-presses like Petritegi, built prior to 1526, later consumed in the cider houses of San Sebastian. Urumea, Sagardoaren Ibaia takes a look back at this mode of transport no longer existing in the Urumea valley since the mid 20th century in the shape of various activities and experiences turning the focus on the locals.
